Here are 8 scriptures that reveal the need for people to receive forgiveness. Just because Jesus paid the penalty for people's sins at the Cross doesn't mean that everyone is automatically forgiven. Forgiveness has to be received, according to Scripture, in order for a person to benefit from Christ's propitiating sacrifice.

Luke 24:46-48 "He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things."

Acts 2:38 "Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Acts 10:43 "All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Acts 13:38,39 "Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses."

Acts 22:16 "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name."

Acts 26:18 "to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me."

Ephesians 1:7 "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace..."

1 John 1:8-10 "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us."
